Overhead Welding Whereas horizontal welding has gravity assisting in the filling of the weld pool, overhead welding has the opposite problem, with gravity trying to pull the molten metal from the weld pool. With arc welding, there is a magnetic force helping transfer metal to the weld pool, but with gas welding there is only surface tension helping retain metal in the weld pool. A lower than usual welding current will be needed, as a reduction in the heat input into the weld pool will help retain metal.

Hammers are essential in a welder’s tool kit, including (left to right) chipping, ball pein, cross pein, club and panel beating hammers, just a small collection of what is available. Anti-Splatter Spray Anti-splatter spray, available in a trigger pack or aerosol can, is very useful for easing the removal of weld spatter after welding and keeping associated equipment clean. The product is water based and is sprayed onto the working area once everything is cleaned and ready to weld. The film left, which is non-inflammable, odourless and non-toxic, helps stop the hot weld spatter sticking to surfaces.

Acetylene is extremely unstable and, unlike other gases, cannot be directly compressed into an empty cylinder since it quickly becomes unstable at a pressure in excess of around 20 psi and explodes. The cylinder is instead filled with a porous medium, such as balsa wood or asbestos fibre. This is then saturated with acetone, a common solvent. The acetylene gas is very slowly introduced into the acetone and is readily absorbed, like ink on blotting paper, as the pressure is increased. When the pressure in the cylinder is released during burning of the gas, the acetone gives up the acetylene, leaving just the acetone-soaked medium behind in the cylinder, ready for its next charge of gas.
