Play is relegated to the space in between classes, but considered legitimate in sports, music and arts classes. As adults we tend to lose our earlier ability to play well, especially at work where play is often seen as a frivolous activity with no purpose other than enjoyment. With increasing responsibilities and formal positions, most of us become even less playful and more serious, except when we are allowed to ‘play’ at company parties, dress down on casual Fridays, or during the token ‘outdoor’ exercise at business school and perhaps during ‘brain storming’.

This multifaceted view of play serves as a solid building block in the foundation of Thinking from Within and also indicates the emergent benefits of this practice. 25 26 Thinking from Within The ambiguity of play There is an incredible diversity of activities referred to as ‘play’, which has given rise to an equally wide range of theories that seek to explain the purposes and processes of the activities themselves. Brian Sutton-Smith (1997) describes these theoretical perspectives as ‘rhetorics’ that function both descriptively and normatively to explain and perpetuate play as certain forms of social and cultural activities.

Yet, as subsequent chapters will make increasingly apparent that is perhaps the least appropriate use for this practice. When Thinking from Within, we must expect things to emerge from the interactions of people involved. When we think from within we make sense of and change our interpretations of the world and we perceive things in ways pure reasoning does not. 1). Therefore, when we think from within, over and over again, we can and should expect a different emergent, outcome (and remain sane).
