Every city had an area like it where the poorest of the poor lived. People came to this area to gamble. They visited prostitutes. They bought cheap gin in the honky-tonks and saloons. Here they listened to the African-American music of ragtime and the blues. Louis remembers Grandmother Armstrong’s house as being at 723 James Alley or Jane Alley—a one-block-long street between Gravier and Perdido streets. His mother, Mary Albert (called Mayann by her family), was sixteen years old when she left the sugarcane-growing area of Boutte, Louisiana, and came to New Orleans.

Jazz singers use it even today. Some critics in the 1920s described scat as the avant-garde poetry of sound. Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five became his Hot Seven in 1927 with the addition of Baby Dodds on drums and a tuba player. By this time the recording equipment had improved. Now electric microphones carried the sound directly into the machines that recorded the music. Armstrong stood out from the group with his strong solos on these recordings. They were the basis for his fame among white Americans.

They marched with their music written on stiff cards perched on their horns. It was a good thing Armstrong had learned to read music on the riverboat. Papa Joe Oliver kept sending letters from Chicago. Every letter urged Armstrong to come up north. Finally, in 1922, Armstrong decided to take the plunge. He had a family photograph taken of himself, his mother, and his sister. Then the five-foot-six-inch, plump Little Louie Armstrong boarded the train for Chicago. He took along his typewriter, his record collection, his cornet, a few clothes, and a fish sandwich to eat on the trip.
