On 11 November Mackensen launched a flank attack on Rennenkampf’s First Army taking thousands of prisoners. Second Army was ordered to Lodz along with thousands of reinforcements to prevent the Germans trapping Second Army. Marching through a snowstorm, Fifth Army was at Lodz in just two days: a distance of seventy miles. There were now seven corps in and around the city. The Russians now attempted to encircle the Germans but, when one German corps broke through and attacked from the rear, the Russians retreated.

While the Russians continued their advance, another problem occurred. It seemed likely that Italy would join the war and force the Habsburgs to fight on three fronts. With the Russian superiority in guns and numbers of troops, the Austrians continued to fall back. Only the German troops managed to advance. The snows fell again, giving some respite, but the retreats continued. And on 6 April, the Russians began a major offensive. For days the Russians battered the Habsburg forces causing numerous retreats.

It spent the war on the Eastern Front until September 1918 when it was transferred to the west. Stefan Rettenbacher, a twenty-nine-year-old reservist in a national protection regiment, was killed in action on 29 November 1914. Josef Hummel, serving in 1 Company of 5 Infantry Regiment was born in Naisa in Bavaria on 8 December 1886. He was killed in action on 29 October 1914, during the advance on Warsaw while serving in 36 Infantry Division. 7 relaxing somewhere in East Prussia during November 1914.
