In May, the violent repression of the Birmingham movement, which included the use of police dogs and fire hoses against protesters, some as young as six years old, sickened and outraged the nation and prompted some young southerners previously indifferent to the cause to become movement supporters. In June, President Kennedy's statement that segregation was morally reprehensible, made on the same night that the NAACP's Mississippi field secretary, Medgar Evers, was murdered, along with Kennedy's announcement a week a later that he would propose comprehensive civil rights legislation (that eventually became the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964), gave th e goal of black rights national legitimacy.

Many students left Nashville believing that the creation of SSOC would provide a much needed shot in the arm for local organizing efforts. Clemson's Jerry Gainey, for example, was convinced that with SSOC's assistance, the activist students on his campus could win more white support . c. P Others, though excited to be at the conference and supportive of the new organization, reacted to the meeting with a mixture of confusion and awe. For these students, the conference was an eye-opening experience that served as their introduction to the wider movement.
