41 It was not common where joint families were the desired family structure, as in southern and eastern Europe, nor where formal systems of redistribution of land existed. 42 It was instead common over much of northern and western Europe in early modern times, wherever nuclear or stem families predominated. 44 Service in husbandry was an institution imbedded in a particular Incidence and understanding 27 environment. That farm servants married late, and could save, supported the demand for small farms and checked the growth of supply of their competitors in the labour force, propertyless adults.
