In need of money to battle the Turks threatening Vienna, the emperor summoned the national assembly of Castile, the Cortes, to Valladolid. Unsuccessful in his attempt to persuade the assembled estates of the realm to vote him the service he needed, the king sent the town's representatives home at Easter and elected the monastery of Abrojo, close to Valladolid, as a retreat during Holy Week. Impressed by the austere life of the friars and Zumárraga's devotion, charity, and gravity, he shortly had Zumárraga appointed inquisitor in charge of the investigation against witches in Vizcaya.

8 Little is known about Zumárraga's family and education. In his youth, the twin Cristóbal crossed the Atlantic to attend Spain's celebrated University of Salamanca, which along with those of Paris, Oxford, and Bologna was one of the four great European universities of the Middle Ages. Coincidentally, the city of Salamanca was also the birthplace of the conquistador Coronado, in 1510. The possibility exists that Juan de Oñate accompanied his brother to Spain and attended the same university.
