Common assumptions In all three theories, politeness is viewed as rational, rule-(principle-)governed activity deeply rooted in the human need to maintain smooth, harmonious relationships and to avoid conflicts (Kasper 1990: 194). Thus, a common denominator in all three theories is their claim to universality, though leaving some leeway for culture-specificity. This is most evident in Brown and Levinson’s theory which explicitly (even in the title of the monograph) advocates a universalistic perspective, but still allows for a certain degree of cross-cultural variation, called “ethos” (Brown and Levinson 1987: 243, 253, 283).
