At the time of the Battle of the Marne, after the retreat, changes were made in the relative disposition of the armies. From the 7 September 1914, the 7th and the 6th Armies were moved to the right wing. They left behind Army detachments Gaede and Falkenhausen1 that were of lesser strength. In the effort to take the enemy’s left flank, corps from other Armies were withdrawn and Army High Commands 2 and 4 were used differently. When this so-called ‘race to the sea’ was ended and the Channel coast was reached, the Army was reorganised on 10 October 1914.
