The circumstances surrounding immigration of Mexican families, however, are socially, historically, and culturally different. These differences require alterna tive models that can more adequately describe and explain acculturative processes in Mexican American families (Berry, 1980). S. society. Indeed, the sociohistorical context of the Southwest makes it likely that acculturation of Mexican American families living in this environ ment will follow a different course than that of European descent fami lies.
GOALS OF THE STUDY Our study attempted to identify a multidimensional construct of cul tural identity that would effectively assess bicultural as well as monocul tural orientations on several dimensions. Specifically, the instrument assesses the individual's sense of familiarity with both American and Latino(a) cultures. This measure of cultural identity also incorporates a specific measure of Latino(a) values/attitudes as well as language and behavioral indicators of cultural identity. We then compare four cultural identity groups (based on the familiarity with cultural scales) on lan guage, behavior, and attitude/value scales.
