I hope that my experience with this incredibly stressful situation – an abuse of power by a superior over a subordinate at work – will allow me to support and mentor others who will unfortunately but inevitably also experience this.
During this particular DBT group session, we talked about the connection between how we feel emotionally and how we feel physically. You may have noticed in the past that you’ve developed a headache or muscle tension due to a stressful event or situation. I have too. What is exciting for me about this is that I’ve theorized that if my negative emotions can have adverse effects on my physical wellbeing, then positive emotions should have a positive effect. I began to experiment and noticed, in the least, that when I become aware of physical sensations that are generated by stress, I can change the course of this by changing my thoughts and engaging in relaxation practices.
But that wasn't it. I'm in a long term relationship in which we both feel comfortable being together without marriage. It was something else. I've always found it challenging to keep friends and to enjoy true, reciprocated intimacy with another person, in friendship. It likely goes all the way back to the foundational years, where I spent much of the time in "survival mode," and always hoping that "someone" would come to my rescue. This pattern, like most others that we, as humans, experience, remaining unresolved, came right along with me into adulthood.
