In cases where functions and goals of communicative actions are not clear, or if there are multiple functions, the analysis of effectiveness is problematic (see Chapter 2 in this volume). In some situations, it is important to know not only that a certain action is accomplished, but also, how much time and energy consumption this has taken.

Stuttering can be seen as a communication disorder involving involuntary disruption to the fluency and flow of speech. It is prevalent throughout life with a predominance in males.
