Unlike Plato, there is comparatively little concern with mathematics. Another major interest is logic, of which as a formal discipline Aristotle can fairly be said to have been the founder. How that interest arose is a difficult question to answer, but it must have had something to do first with reflection on Plato’s concern with methodology particularly in the late dialogues, and second with Aristotle’s conception of science itself. It would be a mistake to see Aristotle’s conception of scientific methodology as having a close resemblance to the modern one.
There was an anti-papal demonstration involving the friars in Paris, following which a royal commission questioned all the Franciscan friars to determine which side they were on. A majority, including Scotus and Master Gonsalvus, who later became head of the Franciscan order, sided with the Pope, and the penalty was exile from France within three days. In response the Pope withdrew the University’s right to confer degrees. His subsequent death that same year and the accession of a new Pope led to the lifting of the ban in 1304, and the banished students were helped to return.
In 1307 he was moved to the Franciscan studyhouse in Cologne, where he died the following year. Ockham, by comparison, had a much more turbulent career. He was a much clearer writer than Scotus, but perhaps less of the metaphysician. In many ways his philosophy can be set down as part of the history of logic, although his work on semantics (or ‘supposition’), the first part of his Summa Logicae, follows the tradition of Abelard. Such matters seem to have been something of a preoccupation of contemporary Franciscans.
