But there is a sense in which those topics get introduced not just as topics but as issues. One way this is done is by referring to them using the definite article: ‘the cricket’, ‘the Sunday o:pening’, and so on.

As we have seen, a central feature of CA is a focus on the turn by turn unfolding of talk-in-interaction. This approach is linked to the view that participants themselves use that sequential development as an interpretive resource in order to make sense of one another’s actions. In analysing talk-in-interaction, then, CA places great emphasis on the immediate sequential context in which a turn is produced. But there is a broader sense of ‘context’ which can be invoked. Talk does not occur in a vacuum.

5. The best way to analyse this is by looking at recordings of naturally-occurring interaction, rather than using fieldnotes, as in ethnography, or intuition, as in many kinds of linguistics. CA and media talk: Broadcast talk as institutional interaction I have already mentioned the three defining characteristics of broadcast talk: (i) it displays a close relationship with the structures and patterns of ordinary conversation; (ii) it should however be understood as an institutional form of discourse; and (iii) it is talk that is produced for the benefit of an overhearing audience.
