9 Mediated 9 Weber indeed began the elaboration of his account of values in contemporary society in his inaugural lecture at the University of Freiburg by asserting the inevitable contlict between national and economic values in an international system (Weber, 1980). Values were conceptually strategic für him in aligning the nation with his individualistic methodology since he rejected 'real' bases for nationality in language or race. They were the point of intersection between individual commitment and state power.

Lts narratives are historical and biographical, of peoples and individuals. The biggest ideas bind humankind as a whole. For academic disciplines, professional and occupational fields provide for the routine application of knowledge. lt is no wonder that their necessary specialization may blind them to the big picture that the rest ofthe world already shares. Then we hear the complaints about ivory towers. We should not be deterred. Our job is to bring the big idea down to earth, to put it to more than rhetorical use.

Nonetheless, opposed to the great bulk of self-criticism within our discipline, I foresee a period quite soon when a new dominant paradigm will reestablish itself, at least for a time. It is required by the geopolitical situation of the world. American hegemony, the challenges that face humankind and the requirements for developing a multilateral, networked decision making structure to meet those challenges demand a reworked theory of society. The cutting edge work now will be done on trans-national structures of trust, social capital and the invention of new institutions, discourse and strategic vision, mediation of conflict, narrative and identity formation, the robustness and durability of structures of social relations, the embeddedness of the domains of economy, culture, environment, state in society, the direction of self-development and orientation to the future.
